23 Jun 2018 09:22:40 -0400<p>#personal</p><!-- more --><p>It’s very sunny in the kitchen as I write this which has been preceded by an hour of me stomping around my apartment.  Mostly life is just annoying at best and I try to look on the bright side of things.  Almost on cue the sun in my kitchen gets a little brighter and a little warmer.  And I stare at how disorganized my magic cards are on the table.  My phone off to the side has a text message number that barely increases over seven.  Those seven messages have probably been there for over a year.  I just know the number is constant which means weekend after weekend it gets pretty silent in my kitchen.  I did actually go out this week a few times after work.  Mostly to play magic.  I fixed up my bike last weekend in the kitchen too.  I ride fixed.  I’ve had that bike since maybe 2009 and bought it with some money I made through some contract work for web development.  I rode it all season that first year.  I think I was trying to prove something.  It feels so long ago but I still remember the feeling of trying so hard.  I’m sure back then I looked like an idiot to most people.  I had taken this picture once in my old apartment.  I had posted it somewhere on a bike site and a bunch of people made fun of me.  Somebody didn’t like the style of clothes I was wearing.  I ended up meeting people through critical mass and other events like that outside of the internet.  I think at the time I was just trying to meet people to hang out with.  I did end up meeting some people.  They turned out to be really fucked up.  It seems to be a consistent pattern in Chicago.  You meet people.  You spend a little time with them and you start to realize how potentially toxic their lifestyle is.  With me I still play magic with some friends who teeter on that edge.  I also play with people from comic shops who have nothing to do with any nightlife or DJ bullshit.  I biked over to Bridgeport from Pilsen to play with a DJ friend and a bunch of other people.  It was a nice break from the heat.  I played a game with him earlier in the week and got kind of mad.  Everybody plays with these extremely complicated card combinations in that group.  People have the time to obsess over that shit.  I have a real life.  Not a lot of people understand or even care much about that past the surface level.  And while magic is a great way to pass the time, I have the rest of my life to run.</p><p>Which is to say I run a lot.  In circles maybe.  I’ve been trying to figure it out for awhile now.  Whose fault it really is?  If it matters at the end of the day.  Something never has been quite right with my life here.  I don’t think too many people ask these kinds of deep questions.  Or if they do they get sidetracked and focus on something else.  Or their friends make them think they’re crazy and they shake it off.  Think nothing more of it.  Just go on and be happy.  For me I’d like sometimes to have that kind of peace of mind.  But I come off brooding and intense.  Probably because I have a lot to brood about.  I write about it weekly here.  Nothing changes.  It’s not to sound like I’m mad.  Neither am I really surprised.  America is a loud place.  If you just imagine any eighties action movie in your head you can hear how deafening it is.  I don’t speak very loud.  It hurts my ears.  I also don’t like repeating myself.  I think it’s fucking lame.  My consistency and repetition is pretty obvious.  I’ve secretly run a blog on a dying internet platform for years.  Everybody here is sick of hearing that caveat in my posts.  And yet there’s people out there who think I’ve fizzled out of existence like the ending of Infinity War.  How do you go to Asia fourteen times over five years and nobody has any clue if you’ve left or came back?  Do you mean that little in the grand scheme of things in America?  Are you a whimpering puppy in an alley that random kids poke with a stick because it’s funny?  Dealing with the rejection is one thing.  I’ve come to grips long ago that people just don’t understand ninety percent of what I say.  It comes off as condescending if I explain anything in this environment.  Or it comes across as a challenge.  And those challenges are diffused by long winded lectures about rank and file and the order of all things cool.  And nobody really wants to fight about it.  So it becomes this lazy bullshit explanation about why we have to follow the status quo.  One that has been repeated over and over again and easy to recite.  Nobody wants to hear the real complicated explanation about how you feel.  There’s not enough of an attention span to care.  </p><p>For me really there is only the life I wake up to every day.  I have a job.  I have health insurance most importantly dental.  A filling came out after the game on Wednesday.  I was in a rush to get home early enough.  People started drinking which is always my cue to say goodbye.  I made dinner and felt something crack in my mouth.  The next day at work the filling came out.  Old me would have spent a fucking week lamenting and wondering what to do.  New me looked through my email and found the dentist’s number around the corner from work and scheduled an appointment.  I’ve had a root canal before.  It sucked.  It was also expensive.  I keep staring at the whiteboard in my kitchen.  I have all my finances written up there with my daily spending.  I half dread what the cost is going to be.  But I have the money budgeted out anyway.  I was really excited to find an egg salad sandwich at work in the vending machine.  Overtly so.  Anthony Bourdain used to work in Japan as a chef and would always swear by the Family Mart egg sandwich.  This was a dollar seventy five.  It was pretty good.  Nobody really found that exciting.  I bought that pair of vapormax with cash.  I’ve been focused on cash and getting more financially healthy for a minute now.  I can go out and get ignored here in my own city.  Or I can stay in, save my money, watch NHK news before I go to bed, and wait a few months to buy a flight back to Japan and Asia.  People over there seem to be the only people who keep up with what I’m doing.  That and on the internet.  A BBQ place from Texas hit me up on twitter to ask me about Magic strategy.  My phone barely rings.  Nobody asks how I’m doing outside of the gaming groups.  And even then nobody really asks how I’m doing.  I’m not doing too well.  It feels like nothing here is worth the time.  Like nobody will ever notice or step out of their personal shell to say hello.  It feels like everybody pays attention from a distance but nobody really cares.  The sun is still out.  The sun feels pretty good.  My bike is fixed and I bought a bike lock.  Air Koryo now flies to Xi’an.  Ant-man and the Wasp will be out in a week or two.  Fourth of July still sucks.  My phone still has seven text messages.  Cash still rules everything around
